Looma, an Indigenous community adjacent to the Fitzroy River, can be found approximately 120 km southeast of Derby in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
nitially, the Looma Indigenous community was constructed as accommodation for the Aboriginal stockmen and their families who worked on the Camballin and Liveringa Stations in the late 1950s and 1960s. It was one of the first communities of its kind in Australia. When infighting led to splinter groups within the community needing to relocate, a second community named "New Looma" was built approximately 2 km to the south. A new water supply, housing, and roads were developed to establish the new community while the old community remained unchanged.
